With their build well underway and a strong team in place, CCN is now keen to offer local people an opportunity to start a career in fibre. The new Fibre Engineering trainee programme will upskill people without prior experience to join the project. As fully qualified Fibre Engineers, prospective trainees can look forward to years of reliable work and the chance to be at the centre of digital transformation in the local area.

Trainees will join CCN in full-time, permanent roles from day one. If successful, you will be offered fully funded training in-house with CCN. The training programme will run for 6 -18 months, beginning with two weeks of in-class learning at CCN’s Portsmouth training site. Trainees will then have the opportunity to continue their training for two weeks on-site, shadowing and working alongside established Fibre Engineers. The programme will continue from there until you achieve all of your certifications.

​CityFibre appointed CCN to build the network for much of the south, they have sites in Chichester, Worthing, Dorset and Portsmouth. What does it take to become a Trainee Fibre Engineer?

No prior fibre or telecoms experience is required, but two things are essential for success. First, trainee fibre engineers must be happy doing hands-on work in the field, outdoors. Secondly, a willingness to learn new skills, and commit to the programme will be crucial. Trainees also need to be 21 or over and have two years’ clean driving licences, due to the requirements of the role.

What will trainees get in return?

Each trainee that completes the programme and passes probation will earn their certifications in unit 2 NRSWA (guarding safety & lighting) the SA001, SA002, S7 and S8 fibre qualifications. You will also be promoted to a qualified fibre engineer role, rising to a higher salary and taking on greater autonomy.

Are these paid positions?

Yes. These are full-time, permanent jobs from day one. Trainee Fibre Engineers start on £20,000 per annum. They also receive a pension, 20 days holiday + bank holidays, and retail benefits. Each trainee will be subject to a six month probation period.

What are my career prospects as a Fibre Engineer?

Fibre is a relatively new industry, as such, there aren’t enough skilled professionals in the job market. Qualified and experienced fibre professionals are in high demand across Britain. The CityFibre project alone is expected to be at least 5-years of work. Once the network is built it will still require continuous maintenance, repairs, and expert supervision.

The career path of a Fibre Engineer can include promotions to supervisor or Fibre Engineers can continue their professional development and earn qualifications in other areas. Fibre also has many transferable skills and qualifications for industries such as Utilities or the wider Telecoms industry.
